Older and Still Available Church Resources

For members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it seems that new material is constantly being produced by the Church. We receive the monthly Church magazines, general conference twice a year, Mormon Messages on a regular basis, new aspects to the Church website (such as suicide.lds.org), and a constant flow of Church news stories.

Despite all the new material being produced, the Church still produces and makes available several resources that are older, perhaps a bit out of date, but still very valuable. This post will highlight a few of these resources.

For Recent Converts

200x260The October 2006 issue of the Ensign and Liahona was a special issue dedicated to new converts. It includes articles from Church leaders on how to adapt to life in a new community, a list of Church-specific words, and stories from recent converts. This is a great resource to share with anyone who has recently joined the Church, and is available online (Ensign or Liahona), in the Gospel Library app, and in print.

For a Basic Understanding of the Temple

200x259.jpgThe October 2010 issue of the Ensign and Liahona was the redesigned magazine entitled “Temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints”. It includes articles from four Church presidents and two other Apostles, and a collection of temple photos. The articles address the importance of temples, blessings that come from temples, and how to prepare to receive the full blessings of the temple. It is available online (Ensign or Liahona), in the Gospel Library app, and in print.

For the Book of Mormon

200x260 (1)The October 2011 issue of the Ensign and Liahona was dedicated to the Book of Mormon. It includes articles from several Church leaders, including three Church presidents and three other Apostles, a timeline of the Book of Mormon, and stories from Church members about their experiences with the book. The articles discuss the importance of the Book of Mormon, how to study it, and what we can learn from it. It is available online (Ensign or Liahona), in the Gospel Library app, and in print.

For Temples and the Salt Lake Temple

Probably the best feature film the Church has produced, The Mountain of the Lord reviews the history of building the Salt Lake Temple. Made for the 100th anniversary of the temple’s dedication, it explains the doctrine of temple work, briefly reviews the history of the Utah Saints, covers various details about the temple’s construction, and shows the glory of the finished temple. It is available online or in the Doctrine and Covenants Visual Resource DVD collection.

Conclusion

A wide variety of other resources could be listed. Hopefully this post has pointed out some useful resources and encouraged you to go find more.
